MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE - Join the Fight to Save the Mountain Gorillas
With rebel troops bearing down on Virunga National Park headquarters at Rumangabo, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), park rangers desperately try to protect the mountain gorillas. They need emergency funds. Virunga on the eastern border of the DRC is the crown jewel of Africa’s national parks. It is Africa’s oldest park, home to a quarter of the world’s remaining 780 critically endangered mountain gorillas. It also contains over half of all biodiversity in sub-Saharan Africa.
Be a voice for Virunga
Virunga needs you to spread the news of the crisis to everyone you know and ask each of them to do the same. Harnessing the power of networking can build a larger base of support for Virunga’s rangers. They are willing to protect the park’s critically endangered mountain gorillas at all costs, but they must have help.
Since the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, the region has been plagued with civil war. Blessed by boundless natural resources, minerals, and fossil fuel deposits, the area around Virunga has long been the target of unscrupulous private companies, protected by armed groups . In April 2012 a war started between rebels and government forces. By May and June, the war had spread across the Gorilla Sector, with sustained artillery offensives throughout the area. Virunga’s rangers remained in the park throughout the conflict, and continued their work despite the danger. Over 100 have been killed since fighting began.
